Circular walk Morwenstow and Marsland Mouth

on
January 4, 2023
  • Park at Morwenstow Church, there is a large free car park.
  • This walk took us almost 3 hours with a small break to eat lunch.
  • Distance: 5 Miles.
  • Be aware, there are lots of ascends and descends throughout this walk.

Start in the car park facing the church and walk downhill through the churchyard to a stone stile. Continue down the hill and past The Old Vicarage, a private home. This path descends through some trees (this path was very wet and boggy) down to the bottom of the valley. Cross a wooden footbridge at the bottom before climbing steeply back up again. Pass through a wooden gate and continue up the field with the hedge on your right. Keep going straight on until you approach a farm, there should be a sign reading “alternative path avoiding farmyard” that takes you through a field to join a farm track on the right. Follow this lane until you get to a gate and turn right. Bear left to meet a concrete road. Immediately follow footpath signs left through a gate. Keep the hedge on your left and you will eventually cross a stile at Yeolmouth.

Keep ahead to pass a small barn on your right, with another small barn conversion on the left. Bear right through a gate onto a track. Bear left with this track meets with a made-up road, descending towards Cornakey Farm.

Turn right on the alternative path before you reach the farmyard; walk through the field, then turn right through a wooden gate onto an enclosed farm track. At the end of the enclosed track, keep ahead, with a hedge on your right, to pass through another gate.

Bear left and cross the field diagonally to a triple stile. The field was home to maize or corn and had a slightly worn path to show you where to go.

Bear slightly left across the next field, heading towards the wooded area at the bottom, heading for the buildings beyond the trees. Cross a stile and climb down a very steep bank, with rough steps to cross a large wooden footbridge at the bottom. Climb up the other side, following a rough path. At the top of this hill, follow the sign “alternative permissive track” to pass Marsland Manor. Follow signs briefly right then left to reach a stile onto the lane, where you turn left.

At a junction that reads “Unsuitable for motors” and signposted to “Little Marsland”, turn left. Pass through the gate and bear to the left where the paths divide; there is an information board at this point which informs you about the local wildlife. Pass through an open gate before you come to a fork, bear right on the path that continues to descend down towards the coast.

The path will narrow until it reaches sea level, here is a great place to access the beach and stop for lunch/drink. There is a wooden footbridge which if you cross, you will be in Devon. Use this footbridge to get to the beach. Return from the beach crossing the same bridge and turning right onto the coastal path. Just a warning that this part of the walk is quite challenging, with steep inclines and declines. Take the steep climb, noting the breath taking views behind you.

Once at the top the path will descend towards Litter Mouth, which has steps down and a zig-zag path up the other side to make it less demanding (still hard work though!). You should reach a kissing gate after climbing the 15 minute zig-zag path upwards.

Follow the cliff edge down to Yeol Mouth, then climb again. There should be a short stretch of fairly level ground along Henna Cliff before the descent to Morwenstow begins. You should now be able to see the radar dishes at Coombe ahead of you. The final up-and-down comes to Morwenstow itself, climbing up Vicarage Cliff. Turn left at the gate at the top to follow a farm track back to the church you started at. Rectory Tea Rooms to finish your walk is next to the car park (seasonal).
